Where to go in YORK | #yorkcityguide

Hello everyone and welcome!

After 19 hours long journey all the way from the Czech Republic to northern England we finally arrived to York.

York is an ancient city which was populated by the Vikings in the past. They named the city Jórvik. York was one of the most important cities throughout the Middle Ages and still is nowadays.

I am going to quickly introduce York to you. I have been there with my friends/classmates as a part of school trip. These are top 4+1 places you definitely shouldn't miss. So sit comfortably and let's get right into it.

1. YORK CITY WALLS + YORK MINSTER

You can start your day with a walk around York city walls. The entry is free! When you need some extra energy just simply go for a coffee - the walls have in-built coffee shops. The best time to visit the walls is March because of bloomed daffodils in every garden around.
From the walls we have come to York Minster which is the largest medieval Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. It is one of the world's most magnificent cathedrals. One of the most famous parts of the Minster is The Kings screen with fifteen statues of the Kings of England.
Everywhere around the cathedral are picturesque streets with a lot of bookshops, restaurant and cafes.

2. YORK'S CHOCOLATE STORY

"While other northern centers made their wealth from wool, cotton and steal, York went its own sweet way and built a city from chocolate."

York is the UK's home of chocolate. If you are a chocolate lover, York's chocolate story is the perfect place for your taste buds. They offer guided tours with tasting different kinds of chocolate and chili-chocolate drink. They take you through the history of chocolate and teach you how to taste it like a pro. At the very end of the tour you are able to make your own lollipop. Even though I am not one of those chocolate freaks (like my mum is), I can recommend you to go there because it is nice and fun way how to get know some new information and it's really worth it. You will not be bored, I promise!

3. THE SHAMBLES

"In some sections of the Shambles it is possible to touch both sides of the street with your arms outstretched."

The Shambles is an old street in York. Visiting this street which is near by the York's chocolate story is a must. The Shambles was a street of butchers shops with fresh meat. The architecture had a very practical function. The overhanging fronts of the buildings have protected the meat from direct sunshine. Today you can find there small shops and cafes. I find this street mysterious like the street from the Harry Potter movie might have been inspired by this one. Just take a look yourself!

4. NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM

The last but not least we have visited National Railway Museum. The museum offers three exhibition halls of historically significant vehicles. There is a collection of over 100 locomotives. You can go and look inside the trains for instance in dining wagon (unfortunately without the food). After a well-spent but long day in downtown this is a nice way to end your York tour.

I hope you enjoyed reading my #yorkcityguide and find it useful for someone who have never been there.

Have a nice day as far as it goes,

    1. I am so happy you like it! This is exactly what wanted! This post is supposed to help people imagine/remind the laid-back atmosphere.
I didn't buy anything in The Shambles. :)
And what I liked the most - that's a good question. Let me think... I must say I liked people's behaviour the most. I mean, everyone was so nice and polite. For example, when I asked someone where is a good but not expensive restaurant they answered kindly and helpful - not only in York!
Anyway, Thank you for your comment!
      Eva ♡

  3. Hello Eva, I really enjoyed reading your post. It is so informative and personal. I agree with you: York's chocolate story is the right place for chocolate freaks ( I am one of them ). You're right ..... The Shambles street looks exactly like the one from the Harry Potter movie.

    1. Thank you for your nice comment, Veronika!
      That's cool you love chocolate!
Actually, dark chocolate has a lot of health benefits. For example it may improve brain function, it can lower risk of heart disease and is a great source of antioxidants, which are great for your skin and heart too.
And to Harry Potter - I'm just reading the second book from the collection. It's genious.
      Take care,
      Eva ♡

    2. That is really interesting how much you know about chocolate. I didn't know that the dark chocolate is a great source of antioxidants so thank you for this information. It sounds amazing. But I like the milk chocolate more so it is not that good for me...

Aren't that books much better than film? I recommend you to read the forth part. (HP and the Goblet of the Fire) - I liked this the most.
      Have a nice reading!
      Veronika.
